Nearly 30 meters underground, come and discover the fascinating history of our Gallo-Roman Chalk Pits (UNESCO World Heritage Site) while discovering the Champagne production process.
This wine tourism tour will take you to the heart of the Louis Balincourt Champagne House in Châlons-en-Champagne. Our multilingual and experienced guide will introduce you to the fascinating history of the Châlons chalk pits, whose formation dates back to the Cretaceous period (the time of the dinosaurs). You will discover its history from the exploitation of the quarry in antiquity until the beginning of the 19th century, when champagne found an incomparable setting there to carry out its long aging. While touring our production site, we will also show you the Champagne production process around historical production tools. The experience will conclude with a tasting of 3 cuvées of Louis Balincourt Champagne.

Heritage Crayères 1804 To ensure optimal aging, the house contains a real treasure “an underground cathedral”. This old chalk quarry, operated in medieval times, was used to supply stones for the construction of houses and churches. These majestic Gallo-Roman chalk pits sinking nearly 30 meters underground, forming part of the hillsides, houses and champagne cellars listed as UNESCO world heritage sites, were used from 1804 for the production and aging of champagne. The galleries (representing a storage capacity of 2 million bottles) today serve as a cellar for the best vintages signed Balincourt. They allow champagne to be stored away from light at a constant temperature (10°C) and humidity. Made in the strict tradition of the greatest champagnes, it is distinguished by magnificent complex aromas, bubbles of great finesse and a delicate finish.
